Universities are a place for ideas, but they're also a place where businesses start. More so in the last 10 years, in fact. A standout is Vic Strecher, who spun a business, HealthMedia, out of the University of Michigan which was later sold for $200 million. Stories like Strecher's are the focus of this issue of the Michigan Deal; a twice-a-year project that Crain's has been fostering since 2012. The goal of the Michigan Deal is to shine a light on the money being invested in Michigan as well as the companies being invested in.

There is also an update on the state's venture capital activity as well as a look at the companies that have won some of the startup pitch competitions in the last few months. Investment activity remain brisk in Michigan. And it only builds with exits like HealthMedia. Peruse the university spinoffs in this issue and maybe you'll find the next big exit.
